It’s a Wonderful Train Ride
There’s something uniquely powerful about traveling by train in Seneca Falls, New York — especially aboard a vintage passenger car from the Finger Lakes Rail Experience. As the train hugs the shores of Cayuga Lake, you’re not just entering a town—you’re traveling into the past. From early canals to a record-setting lake bridge to the first Women’s Rights Convention, Seneca Falls has long been a place where history moves — and moves people.
The Cayuga Lake Bridge: A Monument to Early Mobility
Before there were railroads or excursion trains, Cayuga Lake itself was a gateway to the West. Just north of Seneca Falls, the Cayuga Lake Bridge, completed in 1800, was at one time the longest bridge in the Western Hemisphere, stretching 5,412 feet across the water. It was wide enough for three wagons to pass side by side and dramatically increased the speed at which settlers and goods moved westward.
Although the original bridge collapsed in 1808, two subsequent bridges were constructed in the same location. These crossings, combined with the later arrival of canals and railroads, made the region a hub of travel and trade. The final Cayuga bridge was dismantled in the 1850s, but its legacy helped shape Seneca County’s identity as a transportation crossroads.
Today, riding the FLX Rail Experience into Seneca Falls is a chance to reconnect with that story — to cross metaphorical bridges of time and place in one of New York’s most history-rich towns. Travelers aboard our trains will be riding over the former New York Central railroad bridge that replaced the original structures.
